"918"
918 North Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills, California was built in 1928 by Hollywood director, King Vidor. The Tudor-style house of 6,300 square feet became the home of James and Gloria Stewart and their family in 1951 and remained their family home until 1997 when James Stewart passed away. The structure was demolished following its sales in 1998.
The ivy-covered house contained an entrance hall, living room, large library, a dining room as well as a kitchen and breakfast room. The second floor contained 5 bedrooms.
The home was set in property of towering trees, wide lawns and a walled garden on a 1.4-acre plot. Jimmy and Gloria maintained both a flower and vegetable garden and often gifted overflow from their efforts to their notable neighbors.
The Roxbury Drive neighborhood was home to a varied list of motion picture and entertainment personalites.
Neighbors around the Roxbury Drive area included Rosemary Clooney and Lucy and Desi Arnaz and Jack Benny among others.
This exhibit draws on a variety of sources, both personal and professional to give viewers an intimate glimpse into the home that Jimmy and Gloria Stewart purchased shortly after their marriage in 1949.
The original solid oak front door that graced the home and welcomed such luminaries as Rosalind Russell, President and Mrs. Reagan, Greagory Peck, Carol Burnett, Henry Fonda and Bob Hope among others was gifted to the museum several years ago.
The door will serve as the functional entrance to the gallery holding the "918" exhibition.

"Our house was its own cozy little realm. There were flowers everywhere and animals ruled the day. When you walked through the front door, you left the hurly burly of the outside world. Growing up there made you not want to grow up"
