Our beautiful county seat of Indiana is shaking off the last vestiges of winter. Outdoor projects and recreational activities are beginning as the Borough of Indiana continues its celebration of the Bicentennial of our community. April Bicentennial activities include a Tree Planting on Vinegar Hill (location of the Stewart homestead) on April 29th. There are a range of Bicentennial events planned throughout the year, be sure to visit: indianapabicentennial.com for additional information. Our sincere congratulations to IUP’s Dean Michael Hood for the fantastic kick-off dinner event for the Bicentennial celebrations and the great slate of upcoming events!
Here at the museum, we are gearing up for a great summer season. As we have reported, all construction issues are concluded, so, regular museum hours are in effect and we look forward to welcoming you or your group to Downtown Indiana (downtownindiana.org) and the “Jimmy.”
In house activities include plans to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the release of what is arguably James Stewart’s most popular film: “It’s a Wonderful Life.” We are working with the museum of the same name in Seneca Falls, New York, and are in the process of preparing a loan of items from this museum to our sister museum in the purported setting of Bedford Falls: Seneca Falls. Our museum’s old friend Karolyn Grimes, who has visited Indiana many times, will be very involved with the folks in Seneca Falls; it has been a pleasure to establish this new partnership with these fine folks.
We always value our relationship with IUP, and in particular with Diane Stipcak of the IUP Service Learning, who continues to provide this museum with fine young scholars to assist us with operations here at the museum. We are pleased to welcome two new students for the summer term. Shakira Edens will assist both in our office as well as welcoming guests to the museum. Robert Tucker, a graduate student in Public History is assisting us with our collections.
Museum Face Book administrator, Tim Vanderburg is conducting and collecting some great podcast interviews including Carol Burnett, Jim Caviezel and next, our own Carson Greene Jr., founding and current member of our board will talk about the history of the “Jimmy” and share some great “stars in Indiana” stories! These podcast interviews will be available for the public in the coming months on our new web site, which will premier in roughly two months. Watch for our announcement on this and the great new upgrades that will be included.
The Museum’s good friend and artist of the very popular “Indiana Theater Print” George Rothacker has designed a handsome new rack card for the museum which will go out later this month.
Maria Jack of the Indiana Tourist Bureau has been attending many travel and tour shows and doing a great job at promoting our county and brining those great charter bus groups to our museum and downtown. (visitindianacountypa.org)
Tom Robertson, Jimmy Stewart Airport director and museum board member has announced some great events planned for the summer including a visit from the Collings Foundation and their incomparable planes, the 17th through the 19th of August. Of course the annual Airport Festival is scheduled for June 11th and 12th. (jimmystewartairport.com)
My grand niece, Jordan Lehman, finishing her sophomore year at IUP, has brought the ladies of the Gamma Sigma Sigma Sorority to the museum to help us with some spring cleaning. Thanks Jordan and ladies for your much appreciated community service!
As ever, Thanks for listening…. See YOU at the museum!

As many of you know the last few years have been very challenging for this museum. We are pleased to report that considerable media coverage a few years ago detailing the museum’s plight was so beneficial in making many people aware of our museum. It also prompted many folks, like you to send in donations to help keep our tribute to a great actor and great American thriving. I must share with you that those donations ranged from a simple plain envelope with one dollar and a return address of “Harvey” to gifts that only “Clarence” with his heavenly connections could have arranged in their meaningfulness and substance. For each and all of these we are most sincerely grateful.
We hope the site serves as an invitation for you to make a very special trip to our community of Indiana, Pennsylvania, Jimmy’s birthplace and hometown and enjoy our wonderful museum in person. We also know that some of you will not be able to join us here. We sincerely hope very much, that this new site will allow you to share in the tribute and memories that make up the Jimmy Stewart Museum.
Please explore the site and all its new features and be sure to visit our updated Museum Store for great Stewart and Indiana, Pa items, many of which are only available here. It is important to note that new security features have been added to the site, making you on-line shopping easy, fun and fully secure. Welcome and Enjoy!
